Test movement before leaving
Sit down, raise your arms slightly and walk a few steps. Check whether the neckline, shoulders or waistband distract you. Bring a simple alternative if the first choice requires constant attention.
Keep the frame tidy
- Check visible creases and loose labels.
- Empty bulky pockets.
- Wear shoes suitable for the location.
- Take a quick test picture in the planned light.
A jacket that looks excellent on a hanger may pull awkwardly when you sit. A familiar shirt that stays comfortable can produce a more natural portrait with less effort.
Avoid a costume effect
The outfit should reflect a real version of your life. Dressing slightly more carefully is different from borrowing a style you dislike purely for the photograph. Choose a picture you would be comfortable explaining and an outfit you could plausibly wear when meeting someone.
