Find a workable patch of shade
A building edge or broad canopy can help, provided the light is even across your face. Avoid small leaf shadows that create bright spots on skin. Check the background too: a very bright pavement can pull attention away from you.
Adjust before editing
- Move until the face is evenly lit.
- Keep the camera at a comfortable conversational height.
- Take a few frames between expressions.
- Review the eyes and highlights at normal size.
If your forehead is very bright while your eyes disappear, changing position is usually more useful than trying to repair both extremes afterwards.
Keep the setting believable
You do not need a sunset effect to make the photo usable. Choose a clean, recent portrait with a relaxed expression and enough background to feel like a real outing. Save dramatic sunlight for a supporting frame if it makes your face difficult to read.
