Compare proportions
Ask a friend to take one close frame and another from farther away with similar framing after cropping. Look at the nose, forehead and edges of the face. Choose the version that feels recognisable rather than merely dramatic.
Test without overcomplicating
- Use good light and a clean lens.
- Keep the camera near a conversational height.
- Leave space around the subject.
- Review at normal viewing size.
A close phone held below the chin can change both perspective and expression. Moving it back and raising it slightly may improve the result more than a beauty filter.
Preserve enough detail
Do not stand so far away that the final crop becomes tiny. Find a practical middle ground with a clear face and natural proportions. The best distance depends on the camera and framing, so use your test frames rather than a rigid universal measurement.
