Framing and posing

How camera height changes a profile portrait

Start near eye level, then compare small changes. Strong high or low angles can make the photograph feel stylised and change how familiar your proportions appear.

Use a neutral reference

Take one straightforward frame in good light before experimenting. This gives you a comparison that is easier to judge than a set of increasingly exaggerated angles.

Test a small range

  1. Keep the camera at a comfortable distance.
  2. Take an eye-level frame.
  3. Move slightly higher or lower.
  4. Compare expression, posture and background together.

A phone resting on a low table often points upwards, making the ceiling dominate. Raising the support can improve both the face and the room's composition.

Avoid chasing a hidden-angle version

Choose the picture that resembles you in a normal conversation. An angle that disguises your current appearance may create a mismatch when you meet someone. A flattering portrait can still be honest: use good light and relaxed posture rather than relying on extreme perspective.
