Choose a gentle angle
Try placing the light behind and slightly to one side rather than directly behind the head. Check for flare across the face and move the camera a little if contrast disappears.
Test the scene
- Clean the lens before shooting.
- Take a frame and inspect the face, not only the glow.
- Shift position to reduce flare.
- Compare with a frame taken in nearby open shade.
A bright window behind you can make a room portrait look atmospheric while hiding your expression. Turning towards the window may produce a more useful profile photograph even if the background looks less dramatic.
Choose clarity over the effect
Do not keep a backlit image just because the outline looks cinematic. At small size, the eyes and expression should still be visible. If substantial editing is required to reveal the face, use the more evenly lit version as your main portrait.
