Preview the actual shape
A square crop alone does not show what the final avatar will hide. Use the destination's preview or a simple circular guide while keeping the original file unchanged.
Adjust the framing
- Place the face comfortably within the circle.
- Check the top of the hair and chin.
- Remove distracting edge objects with a deliberate crop.
- Review at a small display size.
A portrait holding a pet near one corner may lose the animal in the circular version. A different frame may be clearer than forcing both subjects into a cramped crop.
Keep a flexible master
Save a wider original and create a separate avatar export. Do not permanently cut the source into a circle if you may need a rectangular profile card later. The best avatar is easy to recognise at small size and does not rely on text or details that the crop removes.
